The Old Apple Store Development, Stawell, Somerset.
Based in Stawell, Somerset lies the the Old Apple Store development. Within the grounds of the old apple store sit five new family homes made up of two four-bedroom homes and three, three-bedroom terraced homes. The homes were priced between £275,000 and £399,000, a little higher than the average cost of the local area. ‘Eco-Homes’, the property company behind this build won several awards for their development; The Daily Telegraph’s Best Sustainable Development (2006), the CABE Building for Life (2007) and the RICS Best South-West Project (2008).
The homes are rated at CSH (Code for Sustainable Homes) Level 5 which means they are 100% energy efficient. CSH 6 would mean zero carbon, the target for most modern day projects. The current home owners bought into it due to the appealing environmental credentials and that their energy bills would be significantly reduced to around £400 a year with the possibility of selling excess energy back to the grid.
This was the first sustainable development ‘Eco Homes’ had managed and the technology used in the build was fairly new at the time, because of this the build took longer and cost more than expected so it could be considered more of an experimental build.
A lot of the building was pre-fabricated off-site using locally sourced materials, the thinking behind this would be the higher quality of build and thus, a more air tight home as a result which could be put together on site easily and quickly.
